Amritsar city is in the state of Punjab. It lies about 15 miles (25 km) east of the border with Pakistan. Amritsar is the largest city in Punjab and is a major commercial, cultural, and transportation centre. It is also the centre of Sikhism and the site of the Sikhs’ principal place of worship—the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple.
Jallianwalah Bagh - You probably didn’t read about this in any history books (unless you grew up in India). This place is infamous for the Jallianwalah Bagh massacre led by the British brigadier general Dyer. A large, peaceful crowd had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh to protest against the Rowlatt Act and the arrest of pro-independence activists. Dyer cordoned off the single exit, and ordered the shooting of these innocent civilians which included a large number of children and women. Roughly 1,500 were killed that day and another 1,200 injured. Of course he was never punished by the British government.
Atari-Wagah Border - The lowering of the flags ceremony at the Attari–Wagah border is a daily Central Armed Police Force's (CAPF) practice that the security forces of India (Border Security Force) and Pakistan (Pakistan Rangers) have jointly followed since 1959. The drill is characterized by elaborate and rapid dance-like manoeuvres and raising legs as high as possible, which have been described as "colourful". It is both a symbol of the two countries’ rivalry, and a display of brotherhood and cooperation between the two nations.
